As jazz slowly becomes a more gender-neutral job market, its of great value to have talented women looking not just forward, but back as well. With I Am Three saxophonist Silke Eberhard has taken on one of the most macho of bandleaders, Charles Mingus. With a boldness in approach and interpretation, the three piece strips the great mans music down to an unlikely trio of sax, trumpet (Nikolaus Neuser) and drums (Christian Marien), leaving Mingus two instruments (bass and piano) by the wayside. This isnt an attempt to replicate, instead pay homage, reimagine, and move forward. Mingus is an icon of progressive jazz, and too enigmatic a figure to ever replicate. It is only with real understanding and originality can a genuine tribute really be made. Mingus’ music has clearly affected the musicians involved throughout the years. It has not however dictated a musical path. With I Am Three, sentiment has been saved and progress has been made.
playful, energetic, utterly infectious exploration of the work of Charles Mingus. All About Jazz
